Allotments
During the first half of the last century,
allotments enabled many people to grow much of their own food and
were an important part of the local economy. With the advent of
cheap food interest in allotments waned and much of the land (in
Saxmundham as elsewhere) was used for house building.
The desire for high quality fresh food has revived the interest
in recent years and the Town Council has been asked to try to provide
more allotments. At present there are seven privately owned allotments
with a substantial waiting list. If you own, or know of, any land
in the parish which might be suitable we would very much like to
hear from you.
John Fisher.
All the allotments in
the town are privately owned, and are as follows:
3
in Saxon Road, contact Mr Thompson, 46, Saxon Road, Tel: 01728 602509.
4 at Saxmundham Town
Bowls Club, contact Mr Jim Vice, 124 Saxon Road.
Tel: 01728 603100
As of June 2005 all the allotments are
in use, and Flicks in the High Street has a waiting list. The Town
Council, in conjunction with the Saxmundham Horticultural Society,
puts people who want allotments in touch with residents who have
large gardens that they can't cope with. Please contact the Town
Clerk for details.
