Market Hall Dances – Market Hall, Saxmundham – IP17 1AF
We begin our new season of bals (dances) bringing some of the best live bands from around the country who specialise in French dance music. Our first band are a trio based in the UK and Germany. The trio consists of Steve Tyler (hurdy-gurdy, cittern), Katy Marchant (border pipes, whistles), and Nick Wiseman-Ellis (diatonic button accordion).
Steve and Katy have been playing music together since 2001. The band – Woodwose – was formed in 2012, initially to play balfolk, but since then the scope has been expanded, Nick joined in 2025.
With a vast array of self-penned and traditional tunes for dancing, from driving joyful bourrées and Breton dances to romantic mazurkas and sensual five-time waltzes, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. So, get your dancing shoes ready!
If you prefer not to dance come along and just enjoy the social occasion and the wonderful music.
If you have never tried French and Breton dancing before why not come along and give it a go, for most of the Breton dances you do not require a partner and some are fairly simple to pick up. Most towns in Brittany have a fest noz (night dance) in the summer, often weekly where the whole community comes together, dances, socialises and has a drink or two. We try to emulate this with our bals. There will be lots of people who will help you with the steps.
No bar please bring your own refreshments.
